4th Hands-on Course: Microsurgical Anatomy of the Cerebral Sulci, Gyri, Ventricles, and Fiber Dissection Applied to Glioma, Aneurysm, AVM, and Epileps

This course aims to provide an updated overview on the microsurgical anatomy of the brain, with emphasis on its application in glioma, aneurysm and epilepsy surgeries

There will be 28 participants, divided into 14 pairs occupying 14 workstations (1 pair per workstation); each workstation will have 1 table microscope, a lamp with a magnifying glass and microinstruments for dissection. Each pair will have 2 fixed brains throughout the course (one for each stage). The first stage of the course will consist of dissecting the superficial and deep structures of a brain fixed in the usual way, starting from the lateral surface, followed by dissection of the same structures from the basal surface and finally dissection from the medial surface, so that the same structures are seen from 3 different perspectives. The second stage of the course will consist of dissecting the white fibers of a brain specially prepared using Klingler's method.

Before each step of the dissection, one instructor will give a brief theoretical lecture (3D or 2D) and perform a demonstrative dissection. During the dissection, individual guidance will be given to participants at the stations (there will be 9 instructors on the course).

Throughout the course, clinical cases and respective videos of surgeries will be shown to exemplify the practical application of the anatomy being studied.

Course highlights

1. We follow the principles of microneuroanatomy and microneurosurgery established by professors Albert L. Rhoton Jr., Evandro de Oliveira and M. Gazi Yasargil.
2. This course has been refined since its inception in 1994 at the Microneuroanatomy Laboratory of the Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa in São Paulo (Prof. Evandro de Oliveira), adapting to new technologies and surgical strategies.
3. All instructors were fellows of Prof. Albert L. Rhoton Jr., and/or Prof. Evandro de Oliveira, and/or Prof. Yasargil.
4. Participants have more time for dissection, with shorter lectures.
5. Similar courses are given by the same team in other countries around the world (Taiwan, China, Portugal, USA), but participants invest much less in Brazil.
6. Course participants will learn firsthand about future activities of the International Rhoton Society, the Microsurgical Anatomy Committee of the World Federation of Neurological Societies, and the Neurosurgery Division of the Hospital das Clínicas at FMUSP.
