Specialization in Interventional Psychiatry

The increasing complexity of mental disorders and the rising prevalence of psychiatric conditions in the population demand new approaches in the treatment and management of patients. In Brazil, approximately 10% of the population has some type of mental disorder, with depression and anxiety being the most common. Conventional therapies, such as pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, although effective for many, do not meet the needs of all patients. A significant number of individuals exhibit resistance to treatment or do not achieve complete remission of symptoms.

Interventional psychiatry offers innovative alternatives such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which have shown promising results in refractory patients. TMS, a non-invasive technique, uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells and is effective in resistant depression. ECT, although stigmatized by erroneous representations in the past, is a safe and effective treatment for severe mental disorders, including resistant depression. Ketamine, in turn, stands out as a promising option in the treatment of resistant depression, with rapid effects in reducing symptoms.

Training in psychiatry still focuses on traditional approaches, leaving a significant gap in the qualification for these new techniques.
