Over the last two decades, treatments for acute and chronic pain have evolved significantly, following the description of new pathophysiological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets. Interventional techniques have gained ground with several advantages, including achieving satisfactory pain control with a milder profile of adverse effects compared to more traditional drug treatments.
In recent years, auxiliary imaging methods have evolved, seeking greater effectiveness and safety of procedures. Techniques of radioscopy-guided blocks, infiltrations, and neurolyses have already established themselves as highly beneficial to patients, and the use of ultrasonography is constantly being absorbed within this scenario, either by enabling more precise interventions, adding safety and effectiveness, shortening execution time, and reducing patient and staff exposure to ionizing radiation.
