The Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (IOT) at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da USP offers an immersive orthopedic experience for doctors and undergraduate medical students. In addition to plastered immobilizations, the specialty covers various techniques and therapies for musculoskeletal disorders. The daily life of today's orthopedist will be experienced through the discussion and practice of the topics of traumatology, arthroscopy and ultrasound

The course is theoretical and practical in person. The participants will be divided into groups and will rotate at different stations that address these three topics. Each station will have a theoretical activity, a group dynamic and a practical part supervised by IOT HCFMUSP preceptors

The traumatology station will initially include an exhibition class on Musculoskeletal Fixation, from the explanation of the principles to the evolution of the methods. Then, TBL (team-based learning) activity involving a case of polytraumatized patient. After presenting the case, the discussion of the case will follow in subgroups with an instructor. Finally, there will be practical bone fixation activities simulating the procedures necessary for the treatment of the discussed case

The arthroscopy season begins with an exhibition class on Arthroscopic Technique, its history, applications and advantages in relation to open surgery. After class, students will participate in hands-on activities with black boxes or domes to familiarize themselves with the instruments. Finally, a non-immersive virtual reality simulator will be used to practice arthroscopy.

The ultrasound station will cover concepts of ultrasound and orthopedic pain treatment. First there will be an expository class on the main concepts. Then, practice with ultrasound on generic phantom and joint models. Finally, ultrasound on live models in subgroups

In this way, students will be able to familiarize themselves with aspects of the daily practice of an orthopedist, and understand how technology is usually associated with the specialty. All accompanied by our dedicated and committed body of tutors.
